Dauwpop and JDM Festivals!

Hello,
Last friday we played in France for a long while, and it was a good feeling. The festival is called JDM, and it's in a small town, which has lot of grape gardens and nice sceneries. We had a French breakfast, yummy! We enjoyed thursday's Dauwpop, actually we had lot of fun, Lauri was making jokes of the cows and cow's poo and so on... and we watched Dances with wolves, great movie, a bit long though.

'Neljäs sukupolvi' is a book based on Soundi music magazine's interviews with prominent Finnish musicians.
The book also includes a previously unreleased, in-depth interview with Lauri Ylönen of the Rasmus. So far the book is only available in Finland.

Mexican cover story

Mexico's Sonika Magazine, the alternative oriented and credible magazine, did a cover story on The Rasmus their June issue. Nice!

VIDEO DIARY "SHOT" 3

February 22

Very very early wake up! And make up - everything just like the first time. The mood was pretty good when we drove to the location. The director, Sandra Marschner, works for the German company Katapult Film and she has filmed with Children of Bodum before. There was a mixed crew with German and Spanish workers, about 25 people alltogether. We started filming as soon as the first rays of sun came over the horizon. It was very beautiful. We worked hard all day with different camera positions, camera speeds and lenses. We did some scenes backwords - so Lauri had to learn the words backwords to get the lip sync right. It sounded really funny and strange! We also used the tall camera crane for some really cool wide shots, and movements. We also used the "shotmaker" - the car with the camera and camera man mounted on the back of it - filming while driving very fast towards us, or driving away in high speed.. We filmed Lauri falling backwards while he was singing.

We worked really hard, and there were almost no brakes. As soon as the camera was off there was a photo shoot for a magazine or an interview happening. We spent the whole day outside in the sun, and we all got pretty burned, even though we used sun screen. At one point there was a little wild goat kid running around on the set, bleating loud as Pauli and the crew tried to catch it. No-one succeeded... We also found bones from goats close to the location. We rounded off the day with filming against a blue screen, and using a three-way mirror. It will be very interesting to see which shots will be used in the final video.

All in all this was a very fun video to make, and the director and crew were great. But for the next time we'll probably want to film in a studio - where there is no rain or sand storms...

We went straight from the filming to have some papas arrugadas with mojo ate a local restaurant, happy that the video finally was made!

SHOT ON iTUNES UK

The new ep SHOT (UK Digital version) is now released on iTunes UK. The ep has three extra live tracks, KEEP YOUR HEART BROKEN, SHOT and LAST GENERATION (uk exclusive) (I also found it on Napster. Most likely to be on any website.)

VIDEO DIARY "SHOT" 2

February 8
Flew to Germany.

February 9-19
Went on tour with HIM and Negative for 10 shows. It was fantastic! Loads of people, between 4.000 and 9.000 on every show. All shows sold out. We kicked some seriuos ass on that tour. It was also fun to spend time with HIM on the road. Their fans seemed to really like our show, too, which was a relief.

February 20
Travelled Zurich - Fuerteventura. Very very tired again - played the last gig the night before. Luckily we can relax when we get to Fuerteventura. We arrived safely. But Pauli's guitar was missing when we arrived - we hope it will turn up for the shoot!

February 21
Day off. We slept in and than the whole band went for a 3 hour walk along the seaside, close to Corralejo, where we had the hotel. This time the weather seems better and everything is prepared. Still waiting for Pauli's guitar....  The filming tomorrow is set in the desert, close to the mountain Tindaya. There are ancient stories about the whole spirits who live on that mountain. We went to the mountain today together with the video director Sandra and decided to climb the mountain. Then there were some ritual sarcifices made on top of the mountain, and we prayed to the holy spirits that they would give us good weather the next day.

VIDEO DIARY "SHOT"

February 6

Arrived to Fuerteventura. We were very tired, after the tour with HIM in Russia. The Russians really tried to show us the best of St Petersburg and Moscow. Meetings with the video crew, Eero got his hair cut by the make-up girl, and then an early dinner and off to bed.

February 7

Woke up very very early. Did make up at the hotel at 6:00. A van took us to the location. The morning was very dark and cold. When we got there, we had to wait for the weather to change. After a while it started raining. We stayed in a caravan and drank tea and coffee. The mood was a bit sullen. Lauri did some filming with a "bungee", with the camera mounted on a swing. It stopped raining and we hurried to the set to start filming the performance. It was still quite dark, the sky overcast, the clouds covering the top of the mountains. This was not the weather we expected. Just before we started filming we saw a big orange cloud approaching in the desert, and then we were hit by a sand storm. Several tents just blew away. We could not keep out eyes open. The huge camera crane swayed dangerously in the strong wind. The camera operator could not even pull the focus. It was impossible to film. We waited an hour bet then we had to decide to stop. We went back to the hotel - everyone was really sad. We hade some meetings and decided to continue two weeks later. This whole thing of course costed us and the record company a lot of money. It was the most expensivce hair cut Eero had so far anyway.

PICS FROM COLOMBIA

Check out these fine images from the band's visit to Colombia on April 3 (www.therasmus.com), where they met the Colombian Street Team who brought them gifts from both themselves (like an
ocarina, a bird-shaped whistle) and some Peruvian fans (like scarves). The next day the band did an acoustic performance at the Hard Rock Cafe for RadioActiva and a concert at the Palacio de Los Deportes at night!

MORE PHOTOS FROM ARGENTINA

We got some more exclusive photos (see www.therasmus.com) from Argentina from Noelia, one of the lucky fans who were able to spend some time with the band during the promo and at the afterparty in Buenos Aires on March 28-29. Here is The Rasmus in the Hotel, at Radio Pop (Canal 9), arriving to Radio La 100 and the afterparty. Some crazy moments to share!
Noelia is the webmaster of the Spanish section at www.therasmus.se, and she is also organizing a charity project to help school kids in Argentina.

The Rasmus Jukebox

New single - Shot - international release date April 21st.

It is released as an EP with bonus tracks (two live tracks, Keep Your Heart Broken and Shot, recorded in Germany plus an unreleased acoustic version of Open My Eyes).

 New video - Shot.

Filmed by the foot of the holy mountain of Tindaya on the island Fuerteventura, 100 kilometers off the coast of Morocco, the video well captures the energy of The Rasmus live performance. It is set up to look rather otherworldly, with a dramatic sky with several moons and suns, and an eerie spacy look to it. The visuals are stunning. The video was directed by Sandra Marschner/Katapult Film, who has done Children of Bodom's "In Your Face" video among others.

The Rasmus is currently touring the globe, after three dates together with Metallica and other bands in South Africa, they are now in South America for a six date tour there. Then follows a stretch of summer festivals, all confirmed dates are found on
www.therasmus.com. More dates will be added soon!

Check out the new video at
www.myspace.com/therasmus! Spread the word and the videolink on the site to your friends!

Don't miss The Rasmus' tour blog on their myspace site. They write almost every day. Their own diary from the filming of the Shot video will be added day by day at

SANTIAGO, CHILE, MARCH 31

arriving in chile! we got a warm welcome from about 100 fans in the airport yesterday evening, this time no-one lost his hair. today is for interviews and the show in the evening. trekked to the madre maria statue mountain this morning in centet of santiago de chile, that's one beautiful place. we have kind of high hopes for the rest of the tour,
the response in the buenos aires show was explosive! these people have corazon calientes! in the buenos aires afterparty lauri and kimmo met a guy from our support band, who is really an activist in many fields, politics, music, society... somehow it's good to hear that some people want to stand behind an independently standing South America, without the leash of all the multinational overpower corporations... well i must say that i'm not so active in those fields, but at least i feel for the people of S. America, who deserve to be in charge of all the functions here.

BUENOS AIRES, MARCH 29

first promo day in buenos aires done! we have some pretty crazy fans here, they are very emotional. yesterday we played some acoustic sets in one tv and one radio... when we were leaving, lauri almost lost half of his hair to the wild fans, when they couldn't keep their hands off him. this is a pretty new experience for us. at least these people are not afraid to touch you... in finland the standard of personal space is a bit different, but i don't complain... The concert today must be a good one, you can feel it in the climate between the band and the fans. we rehearsed some acoustic versions of some songs on monday, and even though we haven't been performing many of those before, they came out surprisingly well. also, we did some interviews with some very professional journalists, one of them even interviewed kurt cobain here in buenos aires in 1993... that brought me many memories back... nirvana is still is one of my biggest favorites, and i feel that kurt was a very exceptional person, very straightforward, very honest, very
frustrated, which probably killed him, too... well, we're up for a great show today, and maybe some tango after...
eero

1ST TIME IN ARGENTINA NOW.....

hello,

last couple of days in cape town: lauri and aki with a few crew members went diving in a cage to see great white sharks from a close distance, i saw some video footage that was quite scary, those sharks are big and they look angry... myself, i was learning to surf as it seems i do every day now when i have the possibility. when arriving in c.t. we met one local pro surfer, stacey guy, who then the next day already was guiding me in the atlantic waves for a day. cape town must be one of our favorite places on earth... last friday some of us went to cape point, where the atlantic and the indian oceans meet... bizarre that the indian ocean can be 4-5 degrees warmer, just a mere 15 km away from the atlantic. we also visited the famous table mountain, which really is as beautiful as people tell you. we've got some great pictures from there that you will see a bit later...
on saturday we played a great slot between simple plan and seether (remedy is my fav song at the moment), and it was just great... my english is not proper enough to tell how much we've enjoyed the whole touring festival thing. in the evening we also met james hetfield and lars ulrich, took photos and all that... great memories from s.a. ...
ok, now we'll see how all of south america will take us, our first time in argentina, we're jet lagged and excited...

MORE ON THE DOCUMENTRY

We got a first hand eye-witness report from the preview of The Rasmus Documentary last week. A devoted fan of the band's, Rikka Nyman from Helsinki is also appearing in the film. We asked her how she liked the documentary:

What did you think about the documentary?
I think it was great. It was something that, I think, has been waited among the fans for some time already. A genuine story about how the band got in the position they are today, and most of all, how they are nowadays when their fame is getting bigger all the time.

What was the best thing with it?
I can't just say one best thing so I have to say few things that really made me like it. One of the things was the genuine feeling in it. You were somehow able to sense how the guys were doing this thing with 100and that they were totally comfortable in the interview situations. The athmosphere in the film was relaxed. The other thing was how the documentary showed things from the band's early days that at least most of the fans haven't seen yet. For example having Janne in the document too, telling his side of the story why he left the band in -99 and how he saw the situation. Also the genuine feeling in the clips from backstage etc. was really lovely and made the document special.

How would you describe it, what would other fans expect to see in it?
I would describe it in someway like this. The document actually shows how The Rasmus has been able to receive the good and the bad sides of that all the time growing fame of theirs. There you can see the side of the band that you don't often see on media, the genuine, relaxed guys that still have fun with each other even during a long tour. The documentary also tells you the history, plus some new information about the beginning even though you might have been thinking you've heard it all so many times. Really worth watching!

How did you like seeing yourself in the film?
Before seeing the document I was really prepared for the worst. I had been told what kind of clip there would be in the document but still I didn't really know what to expect. I must admit that I was ashamed and scared about it already in advance. But I have to say it wasn't as bad as I feared. And I must thank the people who were in charge of what will be on the document for making it that good. They really knew what they were doing. But of course seeing yourself on a document like that feels always weird when you aren't used to it.

Thank you, Rikka!

CAPE TOWN MARCH 22ND (Myspace message)

arrived to cape town today, first impressions were... this is an amazingly scenic place, great waterfront views, sunsets, mountains, blue skies... and we have high hopes for the concert here, it's said to be sold out, the capacity is some 25 000 (that's a guess). the concert in durban was great, everyone had a good feeling throughout the gig, people were responsive and the general mood was just right. today i made a short visit to the indian ocean once before we left to the airport. also, metallica put up a great show yesterday, they were happy with the show themselves, and it was just a blow off... the whole crowd just went crazy for them. it's delightful to see your teenage favourites still coming up with a great show. we had lot of fun. their set included all the old hits that we wanted to hear. very nostalgic feelings for us...

tomorrow we gonna try out the atlantic ocean, some of us will go for a shark-cage-dive, myself, i'm heading for the surf, some go for a city sightseeing. in the afternoon we plan to visit the table mountain overlooking cape town... great!

RASMUS: THE DOCUMENTRY

A brand new 1 hour documentary about The Rasmus was previewed last Monday in Helsinki. Aki, Lauri and Eero were there, as well as friends, families, their live crew, invited media and a few lucky fans. This was the first screening of the film, which will be broadcast in Finland on YLE-TV2 on Sunday, 9th of April, 2006 at 3.15 p.m.

"The Rasmus: The Documentary" tells the success story of The Rasmus.

The documentary looks back on the past of the band and tells the story of how success affected the 15-16 year old guys more than ten years ago. It also covers the international break through later on and the feelings related to it. The band members (Lauri Ylnen, Pauli Rantasalmi, Eero Heinonen and Aki Hakala) talk openly about their experiences of dealing with the success and the challenges it has brought about.

The camera crew follows the band closely during the recording and release of the 6th studio album, Hide From The Sun. We see The Rasmus, for example, in the studio in Stockholm, on promotional tours across Europe, at the videoshoot for Sail Away in Latvia and numerous gigs and festivals around Europe. In addition there is plenty of unreleased archive footage of the band, and interviews with people around the band.

This is the first documentary ever made about The Rasmus, and the members themselves like the idea of being captured like this. "I enjoyed the documentary, it gives quite a positive memory from everything from band's history", says bassist Eero Heinonen. "It was especially nice to see some old footage when we were young and thin and funny punks. Now there exists some kind of organized document of this band's career. We just have to keep it going for another 10 years at least."

Everyone knows The Rasmus by name and appearance, but very rarely we hear the band talking openly about their real feelings as successful rock stars. The idea of the documentary was to reveil what sort of thoughts and feelings there are behind the success and glamour.

"It was a very challenging task to do the kind of documentary we wanted," says the producer Terja Salaspuro. "The Rasmus are quite reserved towards the media, as professional artists tend to be. In order to come up with some "real stuff", we had to bombard the guys with numerous questions and let the tape roll. We were praying that at some point they would be too tired to remember to play any roles and would let the curtain fall down."

"The biggest compliment for us was when to Eicca Toppinen from Apocalyptica told that he had cried 5 times during watching the documentary. So there must be some real feelings captured on the tape!" says Terja Salaspuro.

The team behind the film:
Director: Tommi Mattila (Documentaries: HIMmeet Valoa/TV2 (documentary on HIM), Viva Rock 'n' Roll! - On Tour With The Flaming Sideburns/TV2 and Ibiza Documentary/Channel 4 Finland. In addition several TV commercials, short films and music videos.

Journalist: Timo Ihoaso (Music journalist for several Finnish newspapers and magazines such as Aamulehti, Soundi, Rumba, Suosikki, SoneraPlaza, etc.)

Producer: Terja Salaspuro (Documentaries: HIMmeet Valoa/TV2, Ibiza Documentary/Channel 4 Finland and Viva Rock 'n' Roll! - On Tour With The Flaming Sideburns/TV2. Tv programmes: Idols/MTV3, Sessions/SubTV, Pop-komissio/YLE-TV1, Head of Music Dept./Moon TV.)

DURBAN MARCH 20TH

oh God, i'm exhausted, i was surfing, or more precisely learning to surf for 5 hours today at durban's north beach. beautiful place, the water is +25 celsius degrees, and the swell is good, has a lot of power. unfortunately my arms just don't have the power to catch them properly yet... met a few surfers, the south africans seem to be very kind and relaxed, nice place indeed. the other guys went for a safari 60 km out of durban, they saw some wild life like giraffes and stuff... the day has been a bit cloudy and there has been a hint of rain, but it doesn't bother us, as in scandinavia we are used to -10 to -5 degrees celsius these days. tomorrow morning we might have another go on the surf boards, or at least body boards before the concert at absa stadium. life's hard around here, can't complain though...

eero

HI FROM SOUTH AFRICA! (Myspace message)

played the first festival gig yesterday, it was a beauty place, a cricket field with 35 000 people, and a beauty slot, sun setting during our set... the gig was good, audience was not the most responsive, but it felt very comfortable on the stage, people were obviously waiting for Metallica (us waiting for them too). after our set James Hetfield came by our table to say hello and give a few compliments on some songs and the concert, felt very nice. those guys have been anyway a good reason for us to start the whole band... I visited also Nelson Mandela museum yesterday, it's a house in the suburb called Soweto. He's been fighting for freedom ceaselessly, such a strong character and such a bloody history in the past of this country... it's quite heavy, but i felt a really pure and good vibe in the museum-home... we also drove to the slum area of the suburb and that's very interesting for us as we come from a country, where the government is supporting even all the unemployed people and providing flats for those who don't have a home... There's a lot of controversy in this country, but in many ways i like it a lot, not least for the warm climate and the relaxed moods of people. today to Durban, which is said to be warmer and there's also the seaside just next to the hotel, great!

HOME SWEET HOME (myspace message)

March 8

So, we're done with the Japan tour now, have a few days at home before South Africa and South America... The trip was wonderful, we got new friends and new fans, great lot of good memories and maybe even some footage for our next video. Thanks for all ya! Here's a pic from Osaka venue backstage.

POSTCARD FROM JAPAN (Myspace message)

05.03.2006
hello, we are almost finished with the japanese tour. found this funny door in osaka. we made a visit to kyoto where we saw beautiful temples and forests, especially the zen monastery or resthouse felt good to me. i think it was called ryokaishi-gu or something similar... these places must have been very serene and beautiful at the times when there were no big cities around here... also the springs at the temples were very captivating. the air is clear and the weather good, we got some nice panoramic pics over kyoto.
today we played a festival called independence-D, it was a good experience, a challenge for us as there was audience from other bands as well, and the rasmus fans made a good job encouraging the others to party on with them and i enjoyed the concert well. i think we are making a good advance in building up a fanbase in japan. big thanks to the band called Mucc, which probably is the main reason for us to have the precious slot in the festival... they put on a great show! (and you should check out their stuff too)
thanks to all of you who came to see us at the concerts, and we hope that we can come soon again to the land of sushi and sake! Sayonara!

POSTCARD FROM JAPAN (Myspace message)

03.03.2006
Hello, today we played a concert in Osaka. Lauri: "It's a good feeling that is radiating from the people in the audience, it's like they are very innocent, good people, not cynical at all, I feel very comfortable performing in front of them." The gig was very good, very spontaneous, it seems like we are getting along well with Japanese people. Great! They even like our jokes! We played F-F-F-Falling today, as some man in the front row requested it... we haven't played it in a long while and it was lot of fun.

After the show we had a dinner in an expensive italian style restaurant, too small portions and it was a bit of disappointment. Afterparty in rockrock bar (great name), but i passed that one. Tomorrow to Kyoto to visit buddhist temples and to find out how buddhism was established in Asia.

TOKYO FEBRUARY 28TH
hello, we arrived today in japan, tokyo. it's exciting to be here again. i went for a short shopping trip with aki and lauri, trying to find a suitcase for lauri and taking few breaths of fresh winter air on the streets (after a 4 hours delayed sas flight. the gold medal belongs to finland, after all.) a lot of people here. this culture is so different... interesting, good...  food is good. i recommend the teppan-yaki tunafish, 't was great!

eero

NAGOYA MARCH 2ND
we played our 2nd japanese concert today, in nagoya. we thought that wasn't gonna be full house, so we were positively surprised by the good vibes and good audience that there was. the concert felt very good and there was just this feeling of cracking some jokes in the air... nice. we played "days" in the acoustic set today, people enjoyed it. this japanese city living makes me feel like in the movie blade runner, we just function in the 7th to 10th floor of buildings, passing from building to another through bridges... sometimes you get peeks of people who are living at the street level, but this is all so layered... on the street you might walk into a bar or noodle place which can fit only 4 people... music all around... lot of neon lights... rain, umbrellas, masses of people, strange writing symbols...

eero

HELLO ALL! (Myspace message)

After a wild and crazy trip to S:t Petersburg and Moscow and an aborted videoshoot in the middle of a storm (wicked adventure) in Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, we came back to Germany and played for 5.000 fans in Essen last night. Crazy good feeling. People seem to like especially Immortal. We are winning in a game against HIM, we are counting how many bras are being thrown onstage. The Rasmus has a lead of 1-0. Keep em coming. Lets have good time through the Germany/Austria/Switzerland leg of the tour this spring. Probably the most courageous of you will come to Japan and South Africa with us See ya!

Lauri, Pauli, Aki, Eero

VIDEO SHOOT FOR SHOT STOPPED! (www.therasmus.com)

The Rasmus video shoot in Fuerteventura was stopped yesterday due to extremely bad and unexpected weather conditions. Rain and heavy sand storms made it impossible to film, as the technical quipment virtually blew away from the set.
The Rasmus are now off to tour in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and the video can hopefully be shot after the tour.

Release of Hide From The Sun Today.

Today is the official release of The Rasmus new album HIDE FROM THE SUN in most countries in Europe, some follow in the next couple of weeks. The band's 6th album is certainly their strongest so far, heavier but yet more beautiful than before. Listen to the single No Fear, or the equally hit sounding Shot, or the epic Immortal, or Dead Promises (with contributing friends Apocalyptica on cellos)...   ...this is truly astonishing eleven songs - and if you want more - check out the Special Limited Edition of the CD, with one more bonus track and deluxe packaging...

The Rasmus are now very happy to finally release the album, after many months of hard work. The album was recorded in Bromma, Sweden, and just like the two previous records produced by Martin Hansen and Mikael Nord Andersson.

The single No Fear is climbing up sales charts and airplay charts all over Europe now. If you get a chance - don't hesitate to request it from your local radio station!

The Rasmus now look forward to soon go on tour in Europe. "We can't wait to get out and play the new songs on the road", says Lauri.

The fantastic Launch Party!

Dear all,

The Rasmus' Launch Party for the new album was a FANTASTIC SUCCESS!

The party itself was set at a romantic and dramatic mansion outside of Helsinki, on Tuesday September 6th. The 200 VIP guests were taken there by bus and treated with food and drinks in the beautifully lit yard outside the mansion, and everyone was waiting for the performance to happen .There was a tiny stage set up with just two chairs on it, "probably an acoustic gig, then...
...the Canadian TV Team who flew over to shoot a 60 min special felt a bit let down that the performance was gonna be somewhat minimalistic ...   BUT
When the audience gathered in front of the small stage everything suddenly went pitch black. Total night black. And then! Loud explosions, fireworks lighting up a path, leading away, into the forest, where a dreamlike stage is being lit up, beautiful music was heard, and the whole crowd is drawn to the light, like fireflies. It felt like being in "Close Encounters".
The band exploded on stage, blasting away 8 songs from Hide From The Sun. A super performance! Full on sound and lights. This was the songs they played:
  1. No Fear
  2. Lucifer's Angel
  3. Shot
  4. Last Generation
  5. Heartbroken
  6. Sail Away
  7. Night After Night
  8. Don't Let Go
After the gig the party got going, and then Playground Music's  Finnish office surprised all by announcing that the album has pre-sold GOLD in Finland and the band all got their gold records....    ...but then, Tomppa had forgot something, wait, the album actually pre-sold PLATINUM, and the flabbergasted band got also their platinum awards!

....and the party went on until dawn...

The guests included record company people and competition winners from many countries all over the world, such as Germany, UK, Mexico,  Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Norway etc, plus fellow Fin bands Apocalyptica and Kwan, and the crop of the cream of Finnish media, plus several TV crews.

You can find some snapshots from the party in the 'Gallery' section.(www.therasmus.com)

The Rasmus to release new album "Hide From The Sun"

Having just launched their new single "NO FEAR" successfully at radio and TV all over the world, Finnish rock band The Rasmus will be releasing their 6th studio album "HIDE FROM THE SUN" on September 12th. Jörn Heitmann directs the video for "NO FEAR". (Jörn is also responsible for the last three Rammstein videos). It is now a Network Priority at MTV Europe.

As for the band's previous two albums, "Dead Letters" and "Into", Martin Hansen and Mikael Nord Andersson have produced the new CD, which will also be made available as a special limited fan edition (digipack), with a bonus-track and interactive The Rasmus software.

After two years of touring throughout the world, the process for the new album started in January.  Back from a much-needed break, the band started the New Year jamming in their rehearsal room full of fresh ideas from their experiences on the road in new countries.  Soon after rehearsals were completed, the band sojourned to Nord Studios in Stockholm, Sweden and began the recording process.  The producers work in shifts so the studio was in full use for months to come. In July the album was finally mixed.  Right away the team at Playground and Universal Germany took notice of hit potential in several of the tracks: "Shot", "Sail Away", "Last Generation" and especially the brilliant song that would become the first single - "No Fear"

"No Fear was one of the last songs we recorded. Somehow, it happened totally by accident. It was very spontaneous.  Lyrically, in a way I am singing about death, but in this case more of a mental death like starting a new life and leaving the old stuff behind – a sort of a rebirth", Lauri states.

The decision towards the opening track for the album was made easier with "Shot". It is the very essence of the classic The Rasmus song writing style and it starts the album off with a ferocious bang!

"Shot is very much like a typical Rasmus song.  A friend of ours said after hearing five seconds that he recognized that it was our band. This is cool as we have somehow managed to create our own sound." Lauri said.

The process of choosing tracks that will be included on the album is always a tedious process of killing your darlings.  Nevertheless, the process of choosing 11 tracks for a killer album must be dynamic and should result in some surprising elements for the tracklisting. One such surprise was the soaring ballad "Sail Away".

Lauri enthusiastically explains, "Sail Away is a different kind of track on the album. It started off as a campfire song and I played it to the guys and they thought it was really good.  I told them ah it is just one of those whimpy kind of songs. But the guys said this is so good we must record it."  Needless to say Lauri said ok.

After seven months and out of many songs recorded the album was mixed and mastered in July and the release date set for Sept 12, 2005.

The album "Hide from the sun" is the follow-up to their breakthrough album "Dead letters", that sold 1.5 million copies worldwide, went top-10 in 10 countries and received 8 gold and 6 platinum awards. The massive hit single "In The Shadows" went top-10 in 11 countries, won 6 gold and 2 platinum awards and was # 1 most played video on MTV Europe. In total (including "First Day Of My Life", "Guilty" and "In The Shadows"),  the band has sold a total of  over 1 million singles.

The Rasmus have become Scandinavia's most important musical export, winning last year's "Export Award" at the Nordic Music Awards.

Having toured extensively in Europe, Asia, Japan, Canada, USA & Mexico, The Rasmus are now one of the most wanted rock acts around.  A full-blown tour of Europe is scheduled following the release of the album.

The Rasmus studio report, Hide From The Sun.

THE  RASMUS FINALISE THEIR LONG AWAITED ALBUM
By Timo Isoaho

Helsinki-based rock and roll turbulence The Rasmus fulfilled many dreams with their break-through album "Dead Letters". The record's first single "In The Shadows" was a total blast in many countries and "Dead Letters" eventually sold 1,5 million copies worldwide. At the moment, the Finnish band is working hard in a northern Stockholm studio on their next album, "Hide From The Sun", which will be released mid-September. The facts are very clear: "Hide From The Sun" is an extremely important release for The Rasmus. It should establish the band's position in the world of modern rock music. The band's wildest dreams... Well, they are way beyond that.

The Rasmus' vocalist and main song writer (along with guitarist Pauli Rantasalmi) Lauri Ylönen is dressed in black from top to bottom as he is sitting on the bench of a nice terrace by the sea. He is having a well-deserved free day and he couldn't have chosen a better timing as the Stockholm weather is nearly perfect. The hooded shirt turns out quickly too hot as the mid-May sun shines with full force. The corner spot of the terrace is also perfect as Lauri is a well-known star in Sweden's capital as well. Swedish "ultra cool attitude" is thrown away regularly and Ylönen is asked to write autographs almost everywhere; shops, restaurants, streets and hotel lobbies.

- Of course it's a totally unbelievable feeling when a 4000-strong Mexican crowd chants the name of your own band. For minutes and minutes. That is one of those moments I was secretly dreaming of years ago when I quit school and decided to be a professional musician.  I love to meet the fans and talk with them, but sometimes you just need to rest a while. Of course it's also up to me; where I go and what I do in my free time. In Helsinki, people are used to our faces but the situation is totally different for example in southern Europe. But I don't want to complain because I am able to do things I love.

It's almost hard to believe how friendly, natural and humble Lauri Ylönen has remained after the great success. You have to remember one thing; this musician is one of the hottest rock stars in the world but he's not acting like one. But what has happened lately to Lauri? One English fan has bought him a star from the sky. Yes, a star. But it's just the beginning. There are already hundreds of thousands of The Rasmus tattoos all over human bodies around the world. Ebay and other Internet auctions are selling the roll tapes taken from the stage because there are some footprints of the band's musicians on it. Some German fans have also founded a sect called Lauriism.

Swedish producer Mikael Nord Andersson, who has worked with the band many years, reminds us about the dangers of the worldwide worship.

- Great success is strong thing and it affects your mind. The artist is seen as a god-like figure and he may end up thinking in a twisted way. But The Rasmus is a strong band in many ways, also on a mental level. There's also an unbelievable amount of talent and hidden strength in this group.

Andersson also points out that 1,5 million record sales is a great success nowadays.

- I dare to say that "Dead Letters" would have sold lots more without illegal downloading and pirate copies. But of course times are changing and we have to admit that, too.

Andersson and the other producer Martin Hansen are also able to reveal to us some "secrets" behind The Rasmus' success.

- Finnish music is getting more and more popular all the time on many levels. I guess there's something "very Finnish" in The Rasmus' music style that attracts the taste of the masses. There are also some little details in this band's music that are not so common nowadays on the rock scene. And of course the band writes amazing songs! That's the core of everything, Andersson says.

- In the beginning of this process (recordings of "Hide From The Sun"), we talked about the pressure, huge expectations of the fans and so on. These guys were natural as hell and they just told us that "we will write some good songs and then we will record a great album together". And after some very intensive touring, the band is playing tighter than ever and their whole sound is better than before. And they are not lacking catchy and diverse songs, Hansen points out.

250 days on the road

"Dead Letters" has (so far) received eight gold records, five platinum including one double platinum. The Rasmus even got a platinum record from India. Somebody would think that such huge international sales would cause some serious pressure...

- I am aware of the fact that we have to release an absolute killer album. We aren't going to get any success for free; we have to prove ourselves once again. And I'm not denying the pressure. It's there, heavy as hell. But I really want to say that we have been able to turn the pressure into a positive thing. Solidarity in the band couldn't be better and we have developed some kind of an "us against the others"  -attitude. We want to show that "Dead Letters" wasn't an accident.

The history of rock music knows too many examples of groups who have withered or failed after great success, not able to handle the pressure. However, Lauri is not lying when he praises the solidarity of The Rasmus. The band members are still best friends and they share the same twisted sense of humour. Of course, there are differences too. Sometimes, Lauri likes to party "in a rock and roll style" and bass player Eero is heavily into yoga and meditation. In the end, it's extremely important that these guys have their own personal lives, too.

- You have to remember that we spent something like 250 days on the road last year. I love the other band members from the bottom of my heart, but when such a long tour is over, it is great to see other friends, too.

Ancient ceremonies

Because of the huge success of "Dead Letters", The Rasmus got to see countless countries and even more countless odd situations and circumstances. Lauri is still totally amazed when he remembers the band's first visit to Mexico City.

- We were there for some time. One day we were driving around and then we did u-turn in the wrong place, which led to a somewhat delicate encounter with the local police.

Mexico also offered some unforgettable positive experiences.

- For example, our hotel was so great. There was a very nice pool on the roof of the building and so on, Lauri smiles.  - We also went to see old temples at Teotihuacán, outside of Mexico City. Old natives took us under the temples and there were these ancient tunnels and secret caves. We also took part in an ancient meditation ceremony. It was a great experience and we invited natives to come to see our show. They were musicians, too, and they eventually took the stage before us. I was a little bit worried about the crowd's reaction to the indian show but the Mexican public was cheering.
It was a blast!

The Rasmus also got some unexpected help from other Finnish million-seller Nightwish.

- Yeah, we have watched Nightwish's End Of Innocence -dvd many times in our hotel room in Stockholm. The Nightwish-leader Tuomas Holopainen speaks about the success and so on and it's easy to agree with him. It's funny when you get the feeling that "I have experienced those things by myself, too!"

The HIM-leader Ville Valo belongs to Lauri's circle of friends as well and the guys have also worked together lately as they sang a duet on Apocalyptica's latest album. Valo, who has been a European mega-star since 1999, has offered many useful pieces of advice to Ylönen. Lauri will once again put the theory into practise as he prepares for hundreds of interviews later this year. And the next year. And the year beyond that.

- I will do the first interviews by myself because I really want to speak from my point of view at this moment. Talking about interviews, the record company gave me an Excel table some time ago. That array reveals my schedule for the next few months and there wasn't too much free time... In many ways it's great but on the other hand, it also causes some anxiety.

Incredibly fascinating

Lauri raises his sunglasses and asks if he looks tired. Or really really tired. The musician hasn't been sleeping too much lately because he's been working his ass off in the studio. Or writing new lyrics in the hotel. Last night was a rare exception; it was party night. The Rasmus played some of their new songs (like "Immortal", "Lucifer's Angel", "Sail Away", "Shot") for the English and German record company people.

- We are still working on some songs, but we managed to introduce something like six new songs. Of course it's always a very exciting situation to play brand new tracks for someone... I mean, we are extremely satisfied with the new stuff but we have been working with these songs for months. And these people hear them for the first time so it's different for them.

Lauri is not lying when he says that The Rasmus has been working without breaks for months with the new songs. The band's extensive world tour ended in Japan the last days of January.

- We had some time off after the Japanese tour. But it didn't take long before we were working with the new stuff at our rehearsal place in Helsinki. And I have to say that we had lots of new ideas, we weren't lacking songs.

The songs came rolling out with tracks such as lead single, the hook-laden, power-rock track, "No Fear", the obvious first choice single and, similarly as "In The Shadows" had been to "Dead Letters", one of the last songs that the band wrote and recorded.

-"Hide From The Sun" will contain ten or twelve songs; we have to decide that later, Lauri says. Some of the songs are still unfinished but it's safe to say that the album will be more riff-oriented and there are more contrasts this time.

- I am heavily into different riffs. I like to listen to some albums with good separate riffs, even if the whole album's not that good. But Lauri writes riffs, too, and I compose some choruses from time to time. We are not jealous of each other, we just try to write the best possible songs together, says guitarist Pauli.

The Rasmus' bass player Eero Heinonen says that the "Dead Letters'" songs "In My Life" and "Time To Burn" were "keys" for the song writing process for "Hide From The Sun".

- They are pretty hard rocking song and it's really great to play that kind stuff on stage. So we said that maybe we could write more of that kind of songs. We played some new and harder stuff during rehearsals and it felt really good. The final result is that "Hide From The Sun" is absolutely harder compared to "Dead Letters". But I don't mean that we have written a heavy metal album or something like that. It's dark modern rock music with many hard parts.

Furious riffing

Yes. There is some furious riffing on the album, but at the same time there are also some very melodic and catchy pop/rock songs. And then there's for example Apocalyptica raging with their cellos on the track "Dead Promises". Let's take the song "Sail Away" which is a great example of The Rasmus' talent. The song itself feels like "normal rock song" but there's something incredibly fascinating about it. You just want to hear it all over again.

- "Sail Away" is good song! And Apocalyptica's cellos on "Dead Promises" sound so huge, drummer Aki Hakala says.

The recordings of "Hide From The Sun" were pretty easy (if it's ever easy to record an album) for Hakala.

- The producers were laughing and said that maybe I should be ill all the time. I mean, I caught a severe flu and then I had to record some of my parts... And everything went great, better and easier than ever!

He is also making some arrangements for The Rasmus' songs.

- Pauli and Lauri are obviously the songwriters of this band, but we are usually putting final touches to the songs in our rehearsal room. Eero and me also have our own opinions about the songs and of course the songwriters are listening to us, too. Nobody gets angry if someone else has a good idea. And we have also been trying to invent some new things. For example, one of our brand new songs ("Don't Let Go") has a really hard verse and when the chorus comes, we slow the whole thing down. Those kinds of things give some fresh spirit to our music.

At the moment, Lauri and Pauli are also building their own studio in the outskirts of Helsinki.

- The place should be completed in the autumn, Lauri says. I have dreamed to get this kind of place for many years! I mean, it's going to be just great to hang out in our own studio and write new songs together, with acoustic guitars. That is going to be totally fabulous!

Generous imagination

The Rasmus' lyrical world isn't happy. Lauri already wrote some dark stuff in the beginning of the process but he says now that "my lyrics got darker all the time". Ylönen points out that his words are based on reality even if he colours them with interesting metaphors and generous imagination.

- I was reading some of my new lyrics the other day and I just noticed that the words "escape" and "hide" are being repeated all over again. Then there's for example a song called "Lucifer's Angel" which tells about prejudices. You know, hundreds of years ago they were burning witches, but that same thing is happening nowadays, too. Dissidents are locked up or they are silenced to death. The majority of people are still scared if somebody has some totally new thoughts.

- I have been writing the lyrics in Stockholm in a rather lousy hotel room. But the vibe of that place is great; it gives me power and new ideas. You could say that writing is "classic artist's life". I may go to the shop and buy some red wine. Then I just write and write.
